Types of Flexible Exhaust Hoses

  • Automotive Exhaust Flex Pipes:
    • Purpose: Connects exhaust system components (e.g., manifold to muffler) to reduce vibration, noise, and thermal expansion stress. Prevents damage to rigid pipes, flanges, or bolts.

  • Materials:
    • Aluminized Steel: For moderate temperatures (600-1200°F), offering a balance of cost and durability.
    • Stainless Steel (304 or 409): Corrosion-resistant, ideal for high temperatures (>600°C) and harsh environments. 304-grade is preferred for durability due to higher nickel content, while 409 is more affordable but less resistant to rust.
    • Galvanized Steel: Budget-friendly, suitable for temperatures up to 500-600°C. Used in standard applications but prone to rust in wet conditions.
    • Sizes: Diameters from 1.5" to 10" (e.g., 2", 3", 4" common for vehicles). Lengths range from 12" to 25 feet, with pre-cut or custom options.
    • Features: Typically feature a flexible metal bellows with a protective helical braid for gas-tightness and durability. Some include interlock liners for added strength.

  • Garage/Vehicle Exhaust Extraction Hoses:
    • Purpose: Used in repair shops or garages to capture and vent vehicle exhaust fumes, protecting technicians from harmful emissions. Often connected to source-capture systems or external ducts.

  • Materials:
    • High-Temperature Hoses: Multi-layered (e.g., Master Clip HT 1100) for extreme conditions up to 1100°C, used in diesel engine test benches or turbojet exhausts.
    • Thermoplastic Rubber (TPR) or Neoprene: Crushproof, lightweight, up to 200°C with fan assistance. Used in hose reels or stationary systems.
    • Silicone-Coated Glass Fabric: Lightweight, flexible, and heat-resistant up to 300°C (intermittent 450°C). Ideal for automotive manufacturing and exhaust extraction (not diesel).
    • Features: Vibration-resistant, flame-retardant, and often reinforced with steel wire helix for flexibility and durability. Some are crushproof for garage use.

  • Industrial Exhaust Hoses:
    • Purpose: Used in manufacturing, mining, or HVAC for air, fume, or material transfer (e.g., grain, ash).
    • Materials: Galvanized steel, stainless steel, or Hypalon/polyester fabric for high-temperature or corrosive environments.
    • Applications: Engine test benches, aircraft manufacturing, or dry bulk material transport.
